The valuable weight

It is lobster-season in Göteborg! As an old harbour city the fishing industry has a strong tradition. The first lobster catch is quite a happening. At the traditional fish auction the price for these shellfish ended up at 31600 SEK per kilo. If we converge this into euro that is 3580€/kilo – or if you prefer 4960 dollar/kg. For that price you will get a lot of shell and – if the chef does a good job – you will have quite a luxurious meal. A meal that goes well with the gold price at the moment.

With the unsteady world economy the price of gold has raised like skyrocket. We both work at a pawnshop. There you can leave for example your gold jewellery as a pawn, in exchange for money. Right now you can get 210SEK/gram for 18k gold. There are different things that you can pawn, but at the pawnshop gold is number one.

But in the contemporary jewellery scene gold is not the most prominent actor. When we choose material for our artwork, there are many variables that are important. The economical value of the material might be one, but often it is not. How we value the finished piece has more to do with the time we have invested, the aesthetics and/or the concept. And to face facts most jewellers cannot afford making all their pieces in gold.

Sanna Svedestedt's minimal use of 18k gold for the current PIN Anonimum exhibition in Lisbon (theme Useless)

But what does the price index look like for all the other materials we use?

A Constant Grinding 2011, chewing gum necklaces by Karin Roy Andersson
Material : Chewing gum: 58,5€/kg

Vesture 2011 neckpiece by Hanna Liljenberg
Material: Paper 67€7kg
Attack – super glue: 883€/kg

Some of the left overs from jewellery work

A Constant Grinding 2011, brooch by Karin Roy Andersson
Material: Melon seeds (average on different kinds of melons, not calculated the number of “seedless ones I bought by accident) 270€/kg

Rings: Fashionista 2011 by Sanna. Synthetic fibers, laquer
3x3x1.5 cm
Material: Synthetic hair 69€/kg

Maybe it is time to reconsider this idea that gold is too expensive?

Saludos!
