Jewellery art reflects its day and age. Artists may refer to a political or social background, they may be rooted in fashion or arts. The high standards and stunning inventiveness of its participants turn the international special show SCHMUCK into a renowned show case for trends in jewellery art world wide. The selection is made by a distinguished jewellery teacher changing every year.

SCHMUCK is a special show of the International Trade Fair for the Skilled Trades taking place in Munich in March each year.

Schmuck 2010
Special show of the 62nd International Trade Fair Munich

A Dialogue with the Present

The meeting for the jury took place on October 26th and 27th. Almost 600 applications reached us from 36 countries. Monica Gaspar was the invited juror for Schmuck 2010. She selected 60 jewellery artists from 28 countries for Schmuck 2010.

We would of course be very pleased to welcome you during Schmuck 2010 in Munich. The exhibition will take place without any official oppening on the Trade Fair Ground in Munich. On Saturday, 6th March 2010 the Herbert Hofmann Prize will be awarded on the Trade Fair in Hall A1. On Saturday evening the goldsmiths get-together will take place at 8 pm in the Munich Augustiner beerhall, Neuhauser Straße 27, (Munich Centre City, 089/ 231 83 257).

We will again collect and publish all events related to jewellery during the international trade fair in Munich.

· 60 artists in support of a “bejewelled Munich”
· Contemporary jewellery of the highest standard
· Numerous events to entice the world of jewellery to Munich

The special SCHMUCK exhibition makes this international craft fair one of the leading players in the field of contemporary jewellery. In Hall A1 – "Handwerk & Design" – the dominant role that jewellery plays in the field of applied art and handicrafts really comes into its own. The highlight of this special exhibition is the presentation of the Herbert Hofmann Prize on 6 March 2010.

It cannot have been easy for this year’s curator, Mònica Gaspar, when it came to choosing the artists to appear at this special SCHMUCK exhibition. After all, it involved sorting out the very best from around 600 applications. One important aspect in this selection process was that the subject should demonstrate a clear link with the here and now.
Consequently, Ms. Gaspar chose in particular those items which stand out by way of their distinct artistic approaches and make a statement – whether this is a political or social statement, or the expression of a contemporary use of form. This year, the level of international diversity is particularly high as the artists who will be putting their exhibits on display in Munich come from 28 different countries.

The Dutch jewellery artist, Robert Smit, is being presented at SCHMUCK 2010 as one of the true classics. He is among the leading goldsmiths of the present age. His approach challenges the boundaries that have been drawn between the disciplines of jewellery design, draftsmanship, painting and sculpture and his jewellery is defined by colours, lines and gold. Graduates of the ‘Department of Jewellery and Hollowware’ (also known as ‘The Künzli Class’) at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich are also among the exhibiting artists. Peter Bauhuis, for example, who, with his “Avances” collection, embodies the moment of approximation; Alexander Blank with his brooches in the form of animals’ heads; and Mirei Takeuchi with her chains.

The international jewellery scene is eagerly anticipating one date in particular, because this award represents a door-opener to galleries everywhere: the presentation of the Herbert Hofmann Prize on 6.3.2010, which will be taking place at 5 pm on the stage of Hall A1. Furthermore, a whole series of other events and exhibitions will be based around SCHMUCK 2010. Galleries, museums and, this year, also the French and Czech Cultural Institutes will be presenting the world of jewellery in its many facets. Goldsmiths and gallery owners who are staying in Munich for the duration of the international trade fair will be enticing thousands of visitors, jewellery collectors, museum curators and enthusiastic lovers of contemporary jewellery to Munich – so the city is sure to be a in a real jewellery frenzy.
