Do you think that jewelry its being standardizing? What is there of local and universal in your artistic work?
It is impossible to pin down the answers... I think jewelry is being standardizing.. but.. by different languages(jewelry works) by different designers. I think every jewerly work is the answer.
What do you expect when exposing your work to the public (for example with an exhibition)?
My jewelry works look like very simple. But those are not so simple as what they seem. There is a story in each work. It can be called a story concept. I want to tell people the story. Through exposing my work, I can approach the public. And when they see my works in person, they can find more detailed story.
Are other areas besides the jewelry, present in your work?
Of course.. The word ‘contemporary’ means ‘now, ‘at this moment’. It is like a reflection in the mirror. I am a contemporary jewerly designer. So, I design a jewelry with what I feel, see, think now. I always try to find new view in my daily life. For example, jazz music, people, society, articles in newpaper, science, book, film, etc.
The last work, book, film, that has moved me was...
The book <ON JEWELLERY> is really good to me. This book gives a comprehensive overview of the tendencies and role of contemporary international jewelry. I drew inspiration from this book for my jewelry work ‘What is Contemporaneity?’...And my favorite film is ‘The Truman Show’..
A place, space, country whose creativity surprises me...
Natural place... mountatin, sea, river, etc. Wood and stones comes from nature… insects, animal.. Thier colors, structures, shapes, materials, system... When I study about nature, I can find beautiful stories.. The mystery of nature is wonderful.
Is there any designer, jeweller, artist, you appreciate a lot?
A lot. First of all, fashion designer Martin Margiela.. I don’t want to call him just a fashion designer. He is a great designer and also conceptual artist. I think.. I get a lot of inspiration by his book and works. And...Azumi and David (A'N'D). Their ideas for fashion accessories are so creative. And jewelry designer Christoph Zellweger, Monika Brugger... their works are not only jewerly.. but it is an ‘Art’... so beautiful..
What piece or work has given you the most satisfaction?
.. As a contemporary jewelry designer.. it was not clear what exact the contemporary jewerly is. But during the idea process of this work, the word ‘Contemporary jewelry’ is getting close and clear to me. This brooch is an intersection of two circles. When I read a book, I found a very interesting sentence.“The contemporary jewelry is about this time” it said. Because the word ‘Contemporary’ means now. It plays with now. It gave me inspiration for my jewelry. One circle of this brooch means the ‘past’, and the other circle means the ‘future’. Therefore, the intersection part(middle) is the ‘present’. The present lives between the past and the future. The intersection part of this brooch reflects the present state of a person. This brooch tells where I am now and what I see now
