Leonor Hipólito: Camouflage necklaces

Klimt02 | Gallery proudly presents the new series of work from the Portuguese artist Leonor Hipólito.

The series show 4 necklaces that unfold out of a fragment of furniture. I use the furniture pieces as a metaphor for surrounding. Camouflage is about appropriating.
A projection of our closest and intimate universe: house, into what is most intime to us: jewels. Contrary to an expansion of ourselves to the surrounding space it is a condensation and incorporation of that space onto us.

Mari Funaki: coming exhibition

(...) People often find my work very Japanese in aesthetic. I have never been conscious of this during the process of making. When it was pointed out by other people, I reflected and questioned, why do I work the way I do. If I had remained in Japan, I would never have been doing what I am doing now. In Australia I learnt freedom to express myself and to build my own identity. (...)

Born, 1950 in Matsue, Japan. Lives and works from 1970 in Melbourne, Australia. Studied sciences at the Kobe-Gakuin University, Japan, and paint and Gold & Silversmithing at the RMIT University in Australia. From 1995 is the owner and director for Gallery Funaki at Melbourne, Australia
