| Statement | I was born 1977 into factory worker house. Later I got two little sisters. We had no super great paintings on the walls but nearby there was an abandoned factory area and beautiful forests, wild fields, where I spent the most of my days. I wanted to bury dead birds and mice, and tried to heal sick plants and trees. On their summer holidays our parents took us to the islands, where I collected stones and other treasures of the shores. We travelled with a little boat and slept outdoors. I was never afraid of the wilderness. At school I loved biology and drawing lessons, also music.
When we moved closer to the town center, it was a huge shock to me. I wanted to become a veterinarian, but it was impossible. I had to take a risk in the end and choose art studies.
1998 I started to study jewellery by stone smithing at South Carelia Polytechnic. Studies there lasted for five years, because of the exchange year at Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam. 2003 I came back to my hometown Lappeenranta and graduated with a B.A. degree.
Now I work at home, or live at work as it often feels like. I read a lot when I´m not working. Mainly I read about art history, biology and physics on nuclear level. I feel that they are all trying to give me some kind of vision to see something. To find something.
On semester 2006-2007 I was teaching stone smithing at South Carelia Polytechnic. It was exciting. It feels important to try to see bigger pictures. But also structures are needed. To keep yourself focused.
I love the forest, but I need the city too. It is a question of balance.
To travel, to see the distance. I need to feel the movement but also to be able to stop, to pause. To define the difference.
I tell about people, but also want to question the status which some animal species have in our culture. It is fascinating how enormous part they still have in our society, no matter how urbanized the environment has been made to look like. The silent power.
I’m constantly looking for the appropriate function of the jewellery to play with. The connection to the human body. Choosing the colours is also in very important part in my work. Together with the materials and the technique, these all are in the end building up the work’s final name.
Something which can… tell the… show the…

(...) Animals serve as Sari Liimatta’s messengers. The scale of her work reminds one of toys, but then free of any childlike cuddliness.
