Transit – Initial Remarks
The exhibition gives insight into the actual state of contemporary jewellery in Israel. It shows the qualities and particular characteristics of Israeli jewellery artists as well as the differences with respect to the jewellery scene in Central Europe. The political situation is an evident and direct theme for many of the artists. The use of jewellery to make political statements is much more prevalent in Israel than it is here in Germany.
Contemporary jewellery undergoes a continuous development. In addition, it should be noted that many artists do not only make jewellery. Their creativity is reflected in the fact that they are also active in design, fashion and making sculptures and objects. There are three artists who have been role models for the younger generation: Vered Kaminski, Esther Knobel and Deganit Stern Schocken. Their work and teaching has had a strong impact on the recent history of contemporary jewellery in Israel.
Thanks to a research travel grant for curators awarded by the Goethe-Institut, I was able to undertake two trips to Israel. These travels allowed me to gain a deeper insight into the development and role of contemporary jewellery in Israel. In the exhibition, there are works by 18 artists. Some of the most wellknown artists are not among them, but, in their place, surprising and interesting developments in the jewellery of the younger generation can be found. I hope you enjoy the show and the catalogue.
