| Statement | Fachhochschule Düsseldorf / University of Applied Sciences was founded on August 1st, 1971 by merging various existing institutions. These were the Technical College of Engineering, Peter-Behrens Werkkunstschule (School of Arts and Crafts), Höhere Fachschule of Social Work and Social Education and Höhere Wirtschaftsschule (Business Training College).
Fachhochschule Düsseldorf aims to prepare its students for professions requiring the application of academic disciplines or artistic skills. This is achieved by teaching with a strong orientation to practical experience on the basis of science. Students are required to complete their course of study in three and a half or four years, including the time required for the final examination. An academic degree is awarded after successful completion of the course.
Today at FH D 180 professors and 260 other members of the teaching staff prepare nearly 7.800 students for a career. | Courses | FH D offers courses in seven departments. There are five in the Department of Design:
BA and MA Applied Art and Design – Art Objects. Jewellery. Products.
BA and MA Communication Design
MA Exhibition Design
Applied Art and Design Düsseldorf is distinguished by multifacetted approach to jewellery and related
aspects of product design. Other features of both the Bachelor- and the Master-courses are interdisciplinarity and the input of marketing and communication skills.
The broadly based curricula allow the graduates and post-graduates to individually and flexibly define their areas of work.

Object Strategies between Image and Space
This summer course devotes itself to experimental explorations of and research oriented approaches to digital image editing technologies and rapid prototyping as means to develop and generate form. It brings together technologies, materials, forms, traces as well as performative gestures and it explores new ways in the generation of form. Distancing effects and transformation, spontaneity and directness are key words for the experiment with diverse digital and analoguous designtools in the area of tension between image, object and space. The experiments aim at the development of objects that could be implemented by rapid prototyping. A presentation of the results will conclude the course.
The course will be complemented by integral offers such as lectures to chart the art historicalcontexts and excursions to nearby areas such as the open air museum Insel Hombroich, the Langen Foundation and the Cities of Collogne or Bonn.

Institute for Research in Applied Arts - Art. Jewellery. Products
The Institute for Research in Applied Arts (IRAA) originated from various research activities
by the staff in the school of Applied Art and Design as well as the Laboratory for Illustration and Animation, which is a specialist area in the School of Communication Design. It was founded by the Düsseldorf University of Applied Sciences on 30 January 2009 as an artistic and scientific research institution.
The aims of the institute are
To build and develop an interdisciplinary centre of expertise for 3D-modelling, rapid prototyping and installation, for art jewellery and products; to undertake research in a crossover between artistic and technical processes and production methods; to undertake research in jewellery concepts and widen perspectives; to research and develop projects and interactions with industry.
The IRAA supports young artists and junior researchers through artist in residence programmes. Applications by artists and practitioners are invited.

 The Red Light Project
Dipl.-Des. Christina Karababa, Winterterm 2009/2010
A one weeks stay at Ted Notens Red Light Atelier, which is based in the red light district of Amsterdam, was at the core of this project. Students working there explored the location and related to it artistically. They used a variety of analoguous and digital media, sketching, drawing and photographing, making videos or capturing things and body part via 3D-scans, using installation elements to draw everything together in the final presentation.

Nature and Symbol
The winning pieces of the competition Nature and Symbol have been presented in Munich during the jewellery fair inorgenta europe 2010. The jewellery manufacturer Henrich & Denzel has turned to Düsseldorf as a partner for competition because of the expertise in design for serial production which it has become renowned for through Herman Hermsen, one of the professors there. The two winners were Nina Georgia Friesleben and Stefanie Frye, whose designs were selected to be produced in platinum and gold by Henrich & Denzel. The jury members were Paul Derrez, Amsterdam, Isabella Hund, Munich, Klaus Kaufhold, Collogne and Reinhold Ludwig, Ulm. The competition has been featured in the first issue of Art Aurea.

FORMATIV at Sieraad Art Fair, Amsterdam 2009
FORMATIV
FORMATIV is a research group for experimentation and research in digital imaging and design affiliated with the Institute for Research in Applied Arts. Our main focus is the experimental use of digital imaging and modelling techniques. The FORMATIV group’s design work and research is based on the following seven principles:
• Positive and playful experimentation with digital imaging and design tools
• The combination of low-tech and high-tech
• Modulation of forms and objects through process iteration
• Systematic experimentation with the dysfunctional use of software and hardware tools
• The conscious use of errors as a method and integral part of design processes
• The use of innovative scanning methods for morphing and the transformation of objects
• Experimental visualisation and documentation of working processes as an element of holistic design processes
