| Presentation | The Gold and Silversmithing Workshop at the School of Art in the Australian National University is one of Australia’s leading institutions for the practice-led study of contemporary metal work. The newly refurbished and extensively equipped workshop provides a unique environment where small class sizes allow for intensive individual tuition and progressive facilities ensure that students are offered the highest quality learning experience. Students receive comprehensive instruction in traditional and contemporary metal working techniques and produce works that cross boundaries between functional, decorative, wearable and sculptural. A diverse range of materials and related processes are introduced, including both precious and non-precious metals, as well as a wide selection of non-metals. Experimentation with alternative materials is encouraged and often leads to independent study and graduate research. Courses also engage a significant component of concept development and design methodology and throughout the course reference is made to the historical and contemporary context of gold and silversmithing practice. Students are accepted from within Australia and Internationally.

The School has good connections to the wider community, and the public are encouraged to visit the gallery spaces as well as attend the regular public lecture program, Art Forum, and attend the School of Art Annual Lecture, delivered each year by a distinguished scholar from the arts community.
We enjoy strong international connections with other art schools and, through an International Exchange Network, students from the School are able to study at a wide range of prestigious institutions around the world. The Exchange also encourages students from countries outside Australia to come and work in the School's excellent facilities.
A long-established artist-in-residence program brings some of the world's most experienced artists to live and work within the School, exposing students to the work and processes of artists of the highest calibre.
Canberra has a thriving art scene and and is home to many of the nation's premier institutions and the School draws on these for its teaching programs. Finally, the world-class research culture that ANU is renowned for provides a stimulating backdrop to study in the School.
| Teachers | The Gold and Silversmithing Workshop is the first Australian art and design school studio to house a rapid prototyping facility. Based on fused deposition process developed by Stratasys in the US, the School of Art facility allows the development of large prototypes, forming tools and master patterns.
