| Presentation | The philosophy of the Jewellery and Silversmithing department is balancing innovation with old and new approaches to traditional craft techniques. Our objective is to design and create personal and individual work that integrates ‘thought’ and ‘practice’ sharing a common sensitivity to the complex relationships that humans form for objects.
Studio work can be made with a wide range of materials, from precious or semi-precious metals and gemstones, to plastics, wood, paper, stone and textile. These materials are bound together through thoughtful and intense periods of studio-based practice underpinned by an ethos of experimentation, innovation and passion.
We support a reflective understanding of the subject within the contexts of contemporary society and its wider industry - to this end the department embraces working with new technology alongside traditional time-honoured techniques and processes.
Jewellery and Silversmithing at Edinburgh College of Art is managed by a dedicated team of staff, both full- and part-time, who are active in their own professional practice and all of whom have a high profile both nationally and internationally. | History:
Edinburgh College of Art was founded in 1907 with a history dating back to the 18th century. The College entered a new era on 1 August 2011 when it merged with the University of Edinburgh. Both institutions share high academic standards and international reputations, and the merger offers additional exciting opportunities for learning, teaching and research. The College now combines with the University's School of Arts, Culture and Environment to create a new Edinburgh College of Art within the University containing Art, Design, Music, Architecture and Landscape Architecture, and History of Art (you can find out more at www.ed.ac.uk/eca). This new Edinburgh College of Art will be a powerful and dynamic centre for the visual, creative and performing arts within Scotland and beyond.
Exchange links exist between the College and jewellery and silversmithing departments around the world, including USA, Japan, Finland and Seoul, South Korea that were established in 2008 and sponsored by the Incorporation of Hammermen of Edinburgh.
Jewellery and Silversmithing is an internationally renowned department located in the School of Design alongside Glass, Product Design, Textiles, Fashion, Performance Costume, Interior Design and a range of Visual Communication disciplines. BA (Hons), MA and MFA award programmes are all offered with the further opportunity to study for PhD by studio practice. Graduates are typically established in the field as makers, designers, teachers and artists emerging from the College with confidence and adaptable skills. | Teachers | Full-time staff

OUT THE BLUE - nine electric new talents
Spotting and then supporting the work of cutting edge new graduates has always been extremely central to the ethos of the Kath Libbert Gallery. Forging a career straight out of college is really challenging. Now, more than ever, it is vital to exhibit and encourage these incredibly talented jewellers at this formative stage in their careers.
Four of the nine recent graduates selected to exhibit at "OUT THE BLUE"- Nine Electric New Talents at Kath Libbert Gallery are Edinburgh College of Art J&S graduates: Mariko Sumioka, Nabla Pall, Cristina Zani and Heather Woof
